Lighthouse Project – DMA

The amount of data available and produced every day is exploding – data has become an important raw material that is of high importance in nearly every industry sector worldwide. Thereby a vital data economy and a successfully working Data-Services Ecosystem in Austria is one of the factors to enable and ensure sustainable employment and growth and thereby societal stability and well-being. Data have swept into every industry and business function and are now an important factor of production, alongside labour and capital. In Austria, requirements for successful data-driven businesses (concerning regulatory, technical, research, business or societal issues) are not elicited and existing success stories are not visible. Furthermore the existing data environments and processing infrastructure are not efficiently connected, increasing the effort needed to participate in the data economy in Austria significantly. The quality of existing data is often low and data use is often associated with high costs because of the lack of interoperability provided.

Data-Market Austria (DMA) will work toward rectifying these problems by:

Advancing Technology Foundations by (i) using blockchain techniques to allow resilience through a decentralized approach towards provenance, data computation, curation, preservation, and security; (ii) developing the technology basis for data and service brokerage, leading to recommendations for bringing together data and services based on user requirements; and (iii) developing processing and analysing approaches that have acceptable processing speed while fusing multiple data sources, each subject to potentially different security and tracking requirements.

Creating a Data Innovation Environment by building a community of stakeholders (SMEs, start-ups, large enterprises, academics, public administration) around the Data-Services Ecosystem that operate in a clearly regulated environment using innovative business models that ensure the long-term sustainability of the Data-Services Ecosystem beyond the funding period.

Interconnecting Clouds by developing the technology for transparent but controlled access to distributed services, and to public and proprietary data through the Data Market Austria Portal.

Persuading with Pilots that demonstrate the reuse of data and services and resulting value generated through innovative applications built on multiple open and proprietary data sources in the Austrian Data-Services Ecosystem within the Earth Observation and Mobility application areas.

By the end of the project, we expect to have a sustainable Data-Services Ecosystem in Austria, initially running on Austrian cloud infrastructure provided by multiple project partners, using the innovative foundational technology and business models developed during the project. Through the Pilots, the Austrian mobility and space communities will be well established in the Ecosystem, with further communities beginning to use it. The start-up and SME support during the project will lead to first demonstrations of commercial use of the Ecosystem.
